Elaine (Allene) Lott Sammons, 90, of Covington, GA died peacefully at home on 8 June 2022. Her final days were spent surrounded by loving family and friends. Sarah Elaine Lott Sammons was born September 23rd, 1931, the youngest child of Lola Kate Wood and Jesse Darton Lott. Despite leaving school in the 10th grade, she remained a lifelong learner and a voracious reader, curious about the world until her final days. She married Daniel Edgar Sammons on April 26th,1947, and was the mother of five children. She was widowed in March 1965. She worked for many years at the Bibb Company as well as at other businesses in Covington to support her family. Elaine was devoted to her children, and spent much of her time and energy caring for them. She also served as a caretaker to other family members including her mother, who resided with her for many years before passing away. Elaine found much joy and solace in attending Covington Mill Methodist Church along with many family members. She was a passionate animal lover with a long succession of happy and contented cats and dogs. Her fondness for animals extended to several furry “grandchildren,” whom she delighted in spoiling. She loved books of all sorts, and particularly enjoyed mystery novels, romances, and science fiction. Word puzzles were another favorite pastime, as was spending time with cherished friends. Elaine learned to travel in her later years and loved seeing new places and trying local cuisines. In addition to destinations throughout the South, she visited Portugal and Spain. Always willing to try new experiences, she went snorkeling for the first time in the Bahamas when she was 74- despite the fact that she was unable to swim! Elaine was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: Lena Lott Payton, Cordelia Lott Higgins, Thomas Lott, and Joseph Lott. She is survived by her five children: Donna, Daniel, Lola Ann, Jeffrey, and Michael. She also leaves three grandchildren: Heather Sammons Hansen, Matthew Sammons, and Peyton Sammons, as well as two great grandchildren, AJ and Sam Hansen. She is also mourned by her children’s spouses and by her nieces and nephews. For her loved ones, Sarah Elaine Lott Sammons was strong enough to fight for them, soft enough to love each of them wholly, smart enough to reach for the best for them, and sensible enough to help them help themselves. The following verses from the 31st Chapter of Proverbs epitomize her: “Who can find a virtuous woman? Her price is far above rubies. Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. Her children arise up and call her blessed.” A private service will be held to honor her memory. Condolences to be shared with the family may be sent to Donna Sammons at 5204 David Circle, Covington, GA 30014.
