Alan Scott Black

Alan Scott Black, of Columbus Georgia, died on January 22, 2024. He was born on September 17, 1956 in Columbus, Georgia, and was the son of the late Clifford P Black, Sr and Catherine Friedwagner Black. He was proceeded in death by his wife, Susan Bailey Black; his sister, Renate M Black; and his brother, Kenneth Frank Black. He is survived by his brother Dr Clifford P Black, Jr (Diane Terwilliger Black) of Anniston, Alabama; sister E. Susan Binns (Dr Michael J Binns) of Marietta, Georgia; nephew Jason S Black of Irvine, California ; niece Stephanie Smith of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Katherine R Binns of Marietta, Georgia.


Alan graduated with honors from Columbus high school in 1974. He received a congressional appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated with honors in 1978. After graduation, he served as an infantry officer in Hawaii, and also as an exchange officer with the New Zealand army. He graduated from Airborne, Ranger, and Air Assault schools . He graduated from the University of Virginia Medical School in 1987. He did his internship and residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in anesthesiology, and served in the Army medical corps as a staff anesthesiologist for a few years at Dwight David Army Medical Center . After leaving the Army, he settled in Augusta, Georgia for many years in civilian practice. For the past several years, Alan has worked in North Carolina, Maine, West Virginia, and was working in Rome Georgia, when he died.


Alan enjoyed the outdoors, and was an avid hunter, and fisherman. While he was in Augusta, Georgia, he took a sabbatical from his practice to hike the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine.


Alan will be missed by those who loved him. Alan will be buried next to his beloved wife, Susan, in North Carolina during a private memorial service to be held at a later date.
