Curt H. Warfel of Canton, GA passed away at home surrounded by his family Sept. 22, 2025 at the age of 70, following a multi year battle with cancer. He was born in Lewistown, PA on August 22, 1955 to Charles H. and Helen V. (Singleton) Warfel - both deceased. Curt graduated from Chief Logan campus of Penn Highlands HS in 1973 and from Robert Morris University in Pittsburgh in 1979 with a degree in Transportation Management.
Curt worked in the industrial transportation sector for over 40 years for various companies involved in the grain, mining, agricultural and chemical industries, with his principal focus being on rail logistics including rail contracting and management of private rail fleets.
During his career; Curt was active in the National Industrial Transportation League; serving eighteen years on the League's board of directors including seven years on the League’s Executive Committee and two years as League Chairman of the Board. He also served for three years as Chairman of the League’s Rail Transportation Committee and was a past President of the North American Rail Shippers Association. Curt also served three years as a member of the BNSF Railway Customer Advisory Board; six years on the board of the Southwest Association of Rail Shippers; and nine years on the Distribution Committee of the American Chemistry Council.
Having grown up in Lewistown, PA at the midpoint of the old PRR Middle Division, Curt could not help but develop a lifelong interest in railroads and railroad history. In addition to “the real thing”, he also enjoyed collecting and operating O gauge trains and sharing that interest with his sons and grandsons. He was active in both the North Atlanta O Gauge Railroad Club and the Terminus Chapter of the Train Collectors Association - serving as treasurer for both organizations.
Curt also had a lifelong love of history - particularly the Civil War - and enjoyed visiting battlefields and reading about the conflict.
Curt is survived by his wife of 42 years - Julie, sons Alex (Taylor), Zachary, and Max (Sarah) and two grandsons - all of the Atlanta, GA area. Also surviving are his two sisters, Virginia Howe (Roger) of Tallahassee, FL and Brett Buchanan (George) of Lewistown, PA along with numerous cousins and nieces.
At Curt’s request, there will be no visitation or service.
