Dana Gayle Kegley Daniel

July 18, 1949 — May 4, 2026

Monticello, GA

In loving memory and honor of an extraordinary Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister-in-Law, Aunt, and Cousin, Dana Gayle Kegley Daniel, at the young age of 76, Monticello, Georgia, took her final bow and departed her earthly life to Eternal Paradise on Monday, May 4, 2026. Her two adoring sisters, Lore Cooper and Dot Kegley, were by her side. We will forever remember a life filled with immense and unconditional love, and one with a constant sense of caring towards others. Dana Gayle "Blue Eyes" Daniel leaves behind a lifetime of fun-loving and touching memories that only she knew how to make. An exceptional woman and human being, she has left a unique and beautifully profound mark in our hearts, our lives, and to the world.

Her signature trademark and one of her best features were her rich blue eyes, which were reminiscent of a vivid blue summer sky - - a tribute to Bessie Kegley, her late grandmother's blue eyes with the nickname, "Bluebird". Dana was aptly and affectionately referred to as "Blue Eyes" by her family. Her endearing and captivating smile rarely left her face, projecting a warmth and authenticity about who she constantly was.

Born in Bristol, VA on July 18, 1949, Dana was the first child of John D. Kegley and Dorothy L. Williams Kegley, and the oldest of three brothers and two sisters, with all siblings living today. From an early age, Dana was bright and studious and embraced life with vigor and enthusiasm. She made the best of every opportunity and adventure that came her way - - and boy did she ever! She quickly adapted to becoming a 'matriarch' of sorts with the added responsibilities of looking after her younger siblings, as she was continuously there for us making sure we 'looked the part' for school pictures and Sunday church. She drilled us in our studies, assigned household duties, and graciously tucked an extra dollar or two in our pockets when needed. Dana had a distinct bond and unique connection with each of her brothers and sisters. Although the list is long of her many gracious deeds and kind acts that were Dana "to a T", we credit her for helping guide us with the best, most proper, and safest upbringing that left a lasting imprint in shaping our younger and early adult lives. She kept the positive momentum going which flourished throughout our lives.

Impressionable times with friends were made during her high school years at John S. Battle High School, Bristol, VA, where she academically excelled with honors. After her high school graduation, the family moved to Blacksburg, VA, and Dana found herself in a new and bustling college town setting which sparked fresh opportunities and discoveries that further enriched her life.....enter 'Gables Pharmacy' - - a proving ground and springboard which strengthened her independence and professional growth. She then began her college journey and attended Radford College, Radford, VA (now Radford University), and The College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA. Exploring other interests and passions, she changed direction and pivoted to making her way in the professional arena starting from Blacksburg, VA, to New Jersey, Kentucky, and finally back to the Atlanta, GA suburbs. It was an exciting time which proved beneficial and fruitful since she was 100% dedicated to her work and commitment to long-standing endeavors.

Stepping into the many roles Dana played throughout her active and busy life, none could be more significant and vital to being a 'big' sister to five siblings, a devoted wife to her charming and generous late husband, Peter H. Daniel (January 21, 2026), and a loving, nurturing, and supportive 'Mom' to her cherished son, Peter 'Evan' Daniel - - her pride and joy and greatest gift of life. Her one grandchild, Caroline 'Wren' Daniel, age five, was a joy to behold and a bright light in her life with an affectionate bond only a grandmother and granddaughter can share. Last, and not least, Dana was especially fond of all of her 'special' dog pets which gave her immeasurable joy - - ones that her husband, Peter, managed to rescue for a better life; in particular, Ivey Jane, Lola Grace, Guinness, Lilly, Chelsea, Abby, and Fritz.

The rhythm of Dana's life continued with her professional work, family life, and personal interests and hobbies which rounded out her life. She had a treasure trove of passions and adventures that were priceless which she wouldn't trade for the world. Given a piano as a gift from her father early on, Dana took to music and developed a serious appreciation and love for all types and genres that stayed with her throughout her life. An avid listener of music, she would always comment, "music moves my soul" - - taking into account the artistry, structure, emotion, rhythm, and lyrics. With a book always in her hand, Dana was an insatiable reader preferring a good fictional "whodunit" investigative mystery plus ones with intricate plots. The more twists and turns, the better. She was an expert in calculating and crunching numbers on the fly, which came in handy throughout her lifelong career. No one could outdo her lightning-fast wit and razor-sharp mind, as it was her spontaneous and brilliant comebacks that would snag you every time. She was funny, clever, and always on cue with her thinking. Feisty and resilient by nature, Dana was loyal to her standards and core beliefs.

Her palate of comfort foods and drink favorites included hot coffee, Diet Coke, Alfonso and Kalamata black olives, cheddar cheese slices with chewy artisan bread, homemade Tabouli salad, and Driscoll's strawberries. Let it be known she made a mean tossed salad with 'the works!' The Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons with family gatherings and friends in a fully decorated home meant the world to her. Her home was a haven for all who entered. When she was fashionably dressed, she favored a timeless 'Ralph Lauren' style that was classic and polished. The beach was her 'happy place' where she frequently vacationed in Captiva Island and Barefoot Beach, FL - - always sporting a sunburned blush look.

Dana is preceded in death by her mother and father, John Douglas Kegley, and Dorothy Lucille Williams (Kegley) Grisier, her step-father, Dr. Donald W. Grisier, and her beloved husband, Peter Hershell Daniel of 44 years. She leaves behind her son, Evan Daniel (Cheney), and granddaughter, Wren; three brothers, John D. Kegley, II (Cathy), James A. Kegley (Chris), and Mark E. Kegley (Lisa); two sisters, Lore K. Cooper, and Dorothy L. Kegley. Dana is also survived by three nieces, three nephews, and several great-nieces and great-nephews whom she loved immensely.

In lasting remembrance, Dana did not need 'fine-tuning' nor 'coaching' in the ways of life. Her life was not measured in years, but in love, sacrifice, and purpose. She lived her life with strength, grace, dignity, and individuality. Dana had a golden heart, and was a master of everything 'good'. Dana was a loving Sister, Wife, and Mother for all time.

A celebration of Dana K. Daniel's life and legacy to share the many joys and treasured memories that touched our lives will take place in the Fall, 2026.

DANA "BLUE EYES", a tribute poem by James A. Kegley

Oh, Dana "Blue Eyes",

Where have you gone?

Why did you leave us,

Right before the Dawn?

Oh, silly family,

Don't you know I'm here?

Hidden in your every words,

Fresh as the springtime air

Singing with the angels,

Bowing at His feet,

Holding hands with Mamma,

No more pain and grief

Oh, Dana "Blue Eyes",

Where have you gone?

Why, I'm in Paradise, my dears,

I am finally home.
