Evelyn Elizabeth “Betty” Metcalf Cornwell

Evelyn Elizabeth “Betty” Metcalf Cornwell, age 86, of Piedmont, Alabama, passed away peacefully at Cedar Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Cedartown, Georgia, on Saturday, August 29, 2026.

Betty was born November 12, 1939, in Bunnell, Florida, to William Metcalf and Emily Metcalf. She graduated from Highland Academy in Portland, Tennessee. Betty was a talented musician who played piano, organ, guitar, and accordion. As a Christian follower of the Seventh-day Adventist faith, she shared her musical talents with people in various ways and for many years. She taught music lessons to the community while her children were being raised in Washington, Georgia, where she also provided music for weddings and weekly church services for at least two other Christian denominations.

Betty and her husband Clint operated Woodmaster Supply, a tool sharpening and repair business, in Cedartown, Georgia, and Rockmart, Georgia, for a total of 38 years. They also founded Helping Hands Food Pantry in Rockmart, which provided significant food assistance to needy Polk County, Georgia residents for many years.

Whether it was interacting with clients at their food pantry, helping customers at their business, or catching up with her family or with friends she and her husband had met in the community, Betty always had a friendly smile, a warm greeting, and a sincere love for people. She also had a deep desire that people everywhere would find ultimate peace and security by putting their trust in Jesus.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas C. Young, Jr.

Betty is survived by her husband of 48 years, Clynton “Clint” Cornwell; her children, James “Jim” Young, Richard “Rick” Young, Jeffrey “Jeff” Young, and Robert “Rob” Young; her stepdaughter, Debbie Cornwell Dame; her sister, Anita Barto; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Betty’s life will be scheduled for a future time, followed by interment at Collegedale Memorial Park in Collegedale, Tennessee.
