Following in the footsteps of many other Paint Creek boys, he became a Fighting Texas Aggie at Texas A&M College. He was a member of the Corps of Cadets and was most proud of his two years in the Ross Volunteers. He graduated with a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering in 1957.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, LaDell Whitsitt Montgomery, and by his five children John Paul Montgomery (Darla), April Labhart (Glenn), Scott Montgomery (Barbara), Craig Easley (Julia) and Carrie McCormick (Jeff), nine grandchildren (Julie, Rita, Joshua, Trey, Morgan, Olivia, Austin, Brandon & Page) and 2 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Howard Montgomery, his mother, Grace Louella Dilbeck Montgomery, and his brother H.B. Montgomery.

He was a Petroleum Engineer with Humble Oil for eight years and then IBM where he held various staff and managerial positions in Texas and here in Atlanta, GA where he retired in 1989. After a couple of retirement years, he went to work with Market Star and by the time he retired (again), he was Sales Manager over all the states east of the Mississippi River plus all of Canada.

John loved golf, sailing, fishing and hunting, and playing games with his grandkids and friends in his community where he developed and maintained the community’s communications system. As a life-long genealogist he also served as the Genealogy Coordinator for Clan Montgomery Society Int’l. He was active in the Atlanta Texas A&M Club. He sang in several choral groups including the Dunwoody Baptist Church Celebration Choir & Heart Strings. He loved the Lord and his church and served on various committees, as a Deacon, and a bible study teacher of the Samaritan Class for 25 years. He had worked tirelessly as the volunteer computer guru until the church hired someone full-time.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given to Dunwoody Baptist Church
