On May 26, 2026, God called one of His mightiest servants home. John Gartrell Nevitt, Jr. took to Heaven on wings woven from the love, tears, and prayers of his loved ones as they surrounded him. Known as Jack to family and friends, he was a fun-loving, gentle giant, a steadfast man of God, and devoted family man, who was highly revered and loved by all who knew him. He was a protector, a provider, and a role model to many.
Born on October 25, 1954, in Atlanta, GA., Jack was larger than life and quick-witted; he brought humor and light to everything and everyone. Jack was a graduate of Sprayberry High School and played basketball at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL. It was there he met his wife and soulmate, Amanda. Together, they went on to build a life and home with 3 children where weekdays were filled with last minute school projects and weekends were spent on courts and ball fields. He instilled in his children the importance of family, the art of kindness, the necessity of having integrity and being trustworthy and above all, he centered his home around God. He adored his grandchildren and they loved him immensely.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Amanda Callaway Nevitt and his three children Julie Huckeba (Dale) of Kennesaw, James Nevitt (Abbi) of Gainesville, and Jessie Graiser (Doug) of Kennesaw and grandchildren Callie, Emilie, Haley, Dylan, Gunner, Jake, Bree, Casey, Nathaniel and Kierra, sister Lynne Enzweiler of Marietta and brother Chuck Nevitt (Sondra) of Raleigh, and multiple nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father Marcia and John Nevitt, Sr., brother Stephen, and his mother and father-in-law, Mary Ann and James Callaway.
