Phillip Allen was born on October 30, 1957, in Atlanta, Georgia. He moved to his heavenly home on December 26, 2025, in Marietta, Georgia, at the age of 68.
Graduating from Walker High School in DeKalb County in 1975, Phillip enjoyed playing in the marching band and was Drum Major his senior year. After graduating from high school, he went to Georgia State University, where he graduated with a degree in Organ Performance and a minor in Composing/Conducting.
As an accomplished musician, Phillip served as the orchestra director and/or organist at a number of churches in the Atlanta area including Roswell Street Baptist, First Baptist Atlanta, Peachtree Corners Baptist & First Baptist Marietta. Recently, he served as organist at First Baptist Jonesboro, with the Sons of Jubal/Jubal Brass, and as the Music Director of the Southern Winds Concert Band.
Phillip was a prolific composer/arranger with over 4,000 titles under his name. Notable works include: the score & orchestration for "The Boy King" which won a George Foster Peabody award, the 1985 theme song for the nationally televised Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, "The Dream" an original theme song used to promote and procure Atlanta's 1996 Olympic bid, and the score for "The Atlanta Passion Play" from 1997 to 2001.
As a follower of Jesus Christ, Phillip wanted to touch lives with the love of God through music, to enjoy life to the fullest through sheer joy & laughter, & to make music with the utmost highest of excellence. "Soli Deo Gloria" ("Glory to God Alone") was his personal & professional motto.
He is preceded in death by his father, Eugene Allen, brother, Tim Allen, brother-in-law David Hensley, and father-in-law, P.L. "Slug" Lindsey.
Phillip is survived by Mandy, his wife of 24 years. He is also survived by his mother, Winnie Allen; sister, Laurah Hensley; mother-in-law, Linda Lindsey; sister- & brother-in-law, Allison & Randy Rhodes; nieces, nephews, & numerous cousins.
A remembrance service is planned for Thursday, January 29, 2026, at 2 pm in the Sanctuary of Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, Marietta, Georgia, with Senior Pastor, Dr. Clay Smith, officiating. A reception will follow the service in the Magnolia Room at the church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested in Phillip's memory to Jubal Ministries, Living Faith International, or to the charitable or missions organization of your choice.
