Shirley Vinson Smothers, 80, of Rome, Georgia, entered into the presence of the Lord on March, 21, 2026.
Shirley was born in San Francisco, California, to the late Horace Watson Vinson and Bonnie Lee Salmon. She delighted in reading her bible and growing in her faith. She devoted more than 40 years to compassionate service in nursing and healthcare. Shirley was known for her strong work ethic, a deep love of nature- with a passion for gardening, flowers, and bird watching. She embraced life with a spirit of adventure, and a found joy in the outdoors. She had a warm welcoming spirit that never met a stranger. Also known for her kindness, generous heart and friendly nature, she also had a gift for making everyone feel at home.
She is survived by her daughter, Tracey Ely (Dino) of Rome, her grandchildren: Jessica Thackston (Ryne) of Rockmart, Dalton Warren (Jordan) of Rome, Mae Neese of Tennessee, Jesse Neese of Tennessee. Great-grandchildren: Tobias, Atlas, Layla Warren, Blakely and Dallas Perez. Brothers Sam Vinson (Frissie) of Kingston, and James Cobb of Kingston. And, several cousins, nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, daughter Sherry Neese, sister Jackie Westmoreland, and beloved dog Eddy.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday April 18th, 2026, at 2:00pm at Radio Springs Baptist Church in Rome, Georgia.
Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her, her presence brought light to those around her and the world feels darker without her.
