Steven Phillip Gray, 76, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, in Canton, Ga. He was born on August 11, 1949, in Kent, Washington, to Laverne and Delmar Gray. Steven often spoke fondly of growing up in Kent and greatly admired his grandfather, who left a lasting impression on his life.
About five years ago, after experiencing medical issues, Steven moved to Canton, Georgia, to be closer to his daughter. True to form, he bounced back and regained much of his health and independence. His kids often referred to him as “Superman” because of his incredible ability to heal quickly and to push through hardships with strength and determination.
Steve spent most of his adult life in Deary, Idaho, a place he deeply loved and always considered home. He worked in the flooring industry for many years and was known for his hard work, resourcefulness, and ability to figure out almost anything.
Music was one of the greatest joys of Steve’s life. In his younger years, he played in many bands as both a singer and a guitarist. He loved performing, entertaining people, and being on stage. He was a true crowd pleaser with a natural charisma that drew people in. Steve also proudly served in Vietnam and is a veteran of the United States Navy. He often considered his years in music and the Navy among the best times of his life.
Steve loved the outdoors, especially boating, camping, and fishing, and found peace being outside in nature. He loved animals, lived simply, and valued experiences and people over material things. He was caring, generous, intelligent, and had a very distinct sense of humor that people either immediately understood or grew to appreciate over time. He was witty, sharp, and somehow seemed to know the answer to everything.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janet Gray, whom he loved dearly and missed deeply throughout the years following her passing.
Steve is survived by his children: Shawna Gray, Riesha St. Peter, Justin Gray, and Jason Mayburry; and by the grandchildren he was so proud of: Jonathan Mayburry, Sean Mayburry, Graysen St. Peter, Gavin St. Peter, Samuel Gray, Oscar Gray, and Kate Gray.
Steve’s strength, humor, music, stories, and love for his family will never be forgotten. The family plans to hold a memorial service next year when his ashes can be taken home to Idaho.
