Thomas Pierce Gibbs Franklin

September 24, 1948 — July 20, 2025

Marietta, GA

Thomas Pierce Gibbs Franklin, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully in Marietta, Georgia on July 20, 2025 at the age of 76.

Born on September 24, 1948 in Blytheville, Arkansas, Tom led a life marked by service, integrity, and care for others. The son of an Army family, he graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1966 and went on to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1970—an accomplishment that reflected his discipline, intellect, and dedication to service and leadership. Following his military service, he earned a law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1977, laying the foundation for a long and successful career as an employment and labor attorney.

Throughout his legal career, Tom was known not just for his skill and professionalism, but also for his sense of justice and integrity. Later in life, he shifted his focus toward healthcare, becoming the owner of a hospice care company where he found deep purpose in providing comfort and dignity to others during their final days.

When Tom wasn’t working, he found joy in exploring the world by cruise ship with his beloved wife, Alyson, and their close friends—sharing adventures and creating memories that will be treasured forever. He also deeply loved spending time with his children and grandchildren; “Papa days” were among his happiest moments and will be fondly remembered by all who shared them. Family Christmas was another cherished tradition, bringing together four generations to celebrate the season, share laughter over games, and enjoy the gift of simply being together.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Mary Carter, his uncle, Malcolm Steele, and his uncle and aunt Danton and Blanche Steele. He leaves behind his loving wife, Alyson, who was his partner in all things. Also surviving him are his daughters Ashleigh Dick and Jaime Povirk, sons-in-law Billy Dick and Steven Povirk, and grandchildren, Logan, Ryan, Conlan, Lauren, Sophie, Henry, and Charlie. He is also remembered by his sister-in-law, Linzi McConnell, brother-in-law Kirk McConnell, brother Lee Carter, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Tom will be remembered for his steady strength, outgoing nature, and his ability to make those around him feel welcomed and uplifted. His legacy lives on in the family he held dear, the people he helped, and the many lives he touched.

A private celebration of life will be held by the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the West Point Association of Graduates.
